I gotta start studying maritime law again
but where to begin? I think rewatching an unsinkable ship to sink might be a
good start. Yes, you're right. I am talking about the Titanic.
These days i am feeling myself like the
violinists who play their music while the ship is sinking. But if the ship
is going to sink anyway, why would you panic, right?
I don't dare to criticize one of the best
movies of all time, obviously. But i must say that i was quite surprised in the end when i
realized tears on my eyes. Because i rarely cry on movies and yet, i watched quite
a lot of dramatic and romantic movies. I was abstaining to talk about the movie
since it is a very old and wonderful movie. However, i can't see anything holding me
back so here we go.
In my opinion, Titanic has, if i am not mistaken, most romantic love story ever. I think that's why i was quite emotional in the end. There were two people who clearly are not suitable for each other but still end up together because they meant to be. Moreover, they risk their lives for each other so many times that i couldn't count. But this is not what appeals to me most in the movie. The best part and the part that we need to think about it most was the moral dilemma of people who are in the rescue boats. Imagine, in cold and dark weather, you stuck in the middle of the ocean and somehow managed to save yourself by getting into a rescue boat. Would you go back to the battlefield to save the ones who are not lucky enough to get into a boat? Or would you never risk your life and bother going back to take the ones that are struggling to stay surface of the sea? There were twenty boats as they said in the movie and only one of them went back to rescue the others. Just one of them! Honestly, i can't answer this question with an open heart. I think no one can never know unless they face the same situation.

People love their life more than anything. They
love it so much that they prefer it to their spouses' lives. It is
understandable in some way. Everyone could be selfish when facing difficult
times. And no one can think of saving others' lives when they are already trying
to save themselves. After all, human beings are bad by their nature. I agree
with Hobbes on this point by his saying “Homo homini lupus”, meaning, a man is a wolf to another man. Just the right circumstances are required for this to reveal.
I think, from the point of Ross and
Jake, this was a contradiction and quite fascinating for me. Even though they
knew each other for only a few days, they never stopped trying to look at ways to
rescue each other. That's why when Ross saw the rescue boats and said
"wake up Jake, they are here", my heart melted so bad and my tears
fell.
The other part i wanna mention that is the
violinists at the deck. How can a human being possibly continue to play the violin
when there's an apocalypse going on outside? They were so faithful and dedicated
to each other that they didn't stop playing till the very end of the
sinking. When they decided to split, and then one of them changes his mind to
continue to play, the way they all come back and continue playing was very
touching to me. I think some people just want to do the job they know best even
they are aware of the fact that they are gonna drown soon. It is something that
hard to understand and yet quite powerful if you really think its meaning.
Besides, i don't think they play it to entertain and comfort the others from
the beginning. Because there was such a dialogue in the movie: "They are not gonna listen to us right
now", "They were not listening when we were playing in the dining
room either.”
When
you have one job and one job only you good at, even the world comes to an end,
if you have time to practice it, you would practice it. Because if the ship is
gonna sink, it is gonna sink anyway. Likewise, if we are gonna die, we're gonna
die either way. So i think the expression of "feeling like a violinist in
titanic" is considerably strong and also, summarizing our situation in these
days. And i think everyone should ask this question themselves time to time,
just in case, what would you do if you were in a sinking ship?
