Comfort zone: two words we like to use a
lot in our daily lives. Oxford dictionary defines the comfort zone as “ a place or situation in which you feel safe or comfortable,
especially when you choose to stay in this situation instead of trying to work
harder or achieve more”.* So, making coffee in the morning
in my kitchen, for example, is completely within my comfort zone. However, hopping
on my bike and cycling fifteen minutes through traffic to get to campus, making
small talk with the barista, and ordering my coffee at Pret is absolutely
beyond of my comfort zone. Of course, there are levels. Not everything is as
simple as having my morning coffee from Pret.
I have been trying to step outside of my
comfort zone for a while now. Actually I thought we have closed that deal years
ago. But it appears that we did not. I am not sure where this all started. It
was way before my UK journey. Anyway, I have been doing my best since then. But
sometimes it still feels like I don't fit in (to this world). Sure, I made huge
progress. If you compare me to myself ten years ago, you will see that I have
gone a long way. But I still feel like this is not enough.
Every situation is new and I am inexperienced.
I am scared every single time. I know that I succeeded a lot. I know I am
always trying new things outside of my comfort zone. My motto is “You didn't
come this far to only come this far”. But since at the beginning, I am kinda
not good, it makes me sad. When I get sad, I get more upset. Then I enter a
whole new loop.
There is a solid reason why we call them
comfort zones. Comfort zones are comfy. They are safe. They are warm. It’s dreadful outside. Talking to the real estate agent on the phone is scary. Having someone
around for the first time is scary. Riding a bike for the first time in a
completely strange neighbourhood is scary. But unfortunately, life does not
happen inside of your comfort zone. You gotta do all those scary stuff in order
to live a normal life. And would you like me to tell you that you are getting
used to it? Well, I wish I could. You don't. Since every experience is kinda
new in its own genre, you are experiencing everything for the first time in every
time. So there's no such thing as getting used to it. To me, every new task
first seems the most difficult thing in the world and I am the only one who is
facing it alone. They seem impossible. They seem impossible until they become possible.
They seem impossible until I get out of my comfort zone and actually do it.
So to recap, if you are also feeling like,
every single day you are battling things with your wooden sword like a survivor,
I hear you. Because I don't believe we are all that confident in the beginning.
And that is okay. We don't have to. Because everything is scary until it's not,
anymore. And all we are asked to the courage to face them.
