Someone may wonder, why on earth did you watch Lotr
trilogy for the first time on your 25s. I mean, isn't it a bit early? First of
all, i also watched Harry Potter, for the first time on my 22s. Sue me. Also,
we are in quarantine now. I think everything should be acceptable.
When i started to watch the movies, i just
remembered the reason why i did not watch it earlier. The answer was simply,
because of the war scenes. Unfortunately, i do not enjoy the movies when they
include so many violence or war scenes. And yet, thank God Lotr has only 8
hours war scenes, out of 9. It could have been 9 hours though, i am not
complaining.
The first thing that movie made me think is that
there are so many similarities going on with Harry Potter. It was very obvious,
you can't help it. Both movies have a young boy in the main character who becomes
a hero at the end of the movie, both have a male best friend as a side
character, both have an old, powerful, white- hair, wise man who saves the day
at the end of it, both movies have lots of strange creatures which you think like
a normal human being at some point, and both have a weird language. Of course,
i do not dare to make a comparison between them, who do i think i am? But i
have noticed, people are comparing them like crazy on the internet. There are
lots of headlines opened for Samwise Gamgee vs. Ron Weasley, Dumbledore vs.
Gandalf, even Harry Potter vs. Lord of the Rings. Again, i do not dare to
compare both, but i just want to indicate that watching Lotr was much harder
than watching Harry Potter for me.
“Legolas, what do your elf eyes see.”
Most classy and elegant character for me was the Legolas.
Although he was very quiet mostly, he was always in the right place at the
right time and did exactly his job with a smooth and gracious way. I think it
is because of the arrows. It was the less violent weapon on the battlefield.
Also, is it just me or the elves are incredibly beautiful creatures? And i am
not talking just about the women.
“I would have gone with you to the end, into the
very fires of Mordor.”
The other significant and daredevil character was Aragorn.
While i was watching the movies, i always thought him as a king of somewhere.
And yet, at the end of the trilogy, he became one. I can easily say that if he
wasn't doing this much thing, Frodo never can carry the ring to the Mount Doom.
He was so good to make decisions in the time of crisis and especially when the
actual king doesn't decide upon. No need to mention his loyalty to the Arwen,
the most beautiful elf in the movies.
I am not going to go through all characters but when
it is a matter of carrying the ring, two names come to the minds immediately.
Sam and Frodo. Or should i say Mr Frodo as Sam said during all trilogy even the
hardest and toughest times? Sam is the real hero of the movie in my eyes. I can
count a million reasons for that, but if Sam has not existed, Frodo would have
died in the first movie. I strongly defend the idea of Frodo was completely
useless and it was Sam who made it possible to destroy the ring.
“I know. It's all
wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great
stories, Mr Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger,
they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the
end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad
had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even
darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine
out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant
something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr Frodo,
I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of
turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on
to something. That there's some
good in this world, Mr Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.”
Samwise Gamgee was not only an excellent friend, a
faithful companion, a good fighter but also a merciful man and kind adviser who
bears all Frodo's caprices and protect him no matter what. I got really angry
when Frodo abandon him due to stupid and sneaky Gollum. Some can say, “it is
because of the ring”. And i agree with that, partially. But from the beginning
of the first movie to the end of the third movie, it was always Sam who made
sacrifices, who carry all the loads and risk his life for the sake of Frodo. While
Frodo writes Sam off with one misconception, it is really hard to love Frodo.
And in the end, when everyone was chanting the name of Frodo, it was a bit
heartbroken for me.
I love Pippin and Merry so much even when they make a
fool of themselves from time to time. They have been very helpful and fought
very bravely in the war. When it comes to the Gandalf, there is nothing wrong
with him, undoubtedly. It can not be. But i would like to see more of his
action or at least impact to the journey. Some may say, he affected an indirect
way or he is the one who starts all of this. But again, in my personal opinion,
Aragorn was more effective in completing the task.
The soundtracks, spoken language, the story, the war
uniforms, the characters generally, were spectacular. I started to listen to
the soundtracks while i am doing my literature reviews. It is just, i think i
did not like it like the others. And most probably, i will not watch it one
more time. Because, again, it was a bit hard for me to watch along with too
many war scenes.
